Reinforced concrete is a common building material for the construction of facilities and other structures. Concrete has a high compressive strength, through it has a very limited tensile strength. Hence to get over these tensile limitations, reinforcing bars are used in the tension side of the structures. Steel rebars are an effective and cost efficient concrete reinforcement, but has the problem of oxidation when exposed to chlorides. Examples of chloride exposure include marine areas like coastal and sea facing areas, regions where road salts are used for deicing, and locations where salt contaminated aggregates are used in the concrete mixture.

When properly protected from ion attack, steel reinforcement can last for decades without exhibiting any visible signs of deterioration. However, it is not always possible to provide this kind of corrosion protection. Insufficient concrete cover, poor design or workmanship, poor concrete mix, and presence of large amounts of aggressive agents al can lead to corrosion of the steel rebar and cracking of the concrete.

Glass Fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite rebars address this corrosion deficiency. GFRP rebar can be used as non -prestressed reinforcement in concrete for members subjected to flexure, shear, and compression loadings. GFRP composite rebar are totally resistant to chloride ion attack, offer a tensile strength of 1½ -2 times that of steel, weigh only 25% of the weight of equivalent size steel rebar, and are highly effective electromagnetic and thermal insulators.

Non-Corrosive –

FRP will not rust, and is impervious to the action of chloride ions, chemicals, toxic industrial conditions and also the alkalinity inherent in concrete.

Light Weight & High Strength to Weight Ratio -

ARC GFRP has low density of 1.9 as compared to greater than 7 for steel. ARC GFRP Rebars weigh ¼ the weight of steel and hence are very light weight. The results in significant cost savings in installation costs, easy handling and faster fabrication with less workers and equipment.

Non-Conductive -

ARC GFRP provide excellent electrical and thermal insulation. Highly efficient in resisting heat transfer such from building exteriors to interiors or for insulating sensitive equipment.

Non-Conductive & Non-Electromagnetic –

Excellent Non-electromagnetic and Non-Conductive properties, hence stray electrical currents do not cause induction in ARC GFRC REBARS. There is significant loss of power in areas of high electrical fields due to induction in the surrounding steel reinforcement resulting in: extensive earthing systems required for electrical safety, greater concrete coverage requirements for electrical insulation, accelerated corrosion of rebars due to high levels of electrolysis, as well as increased installation costs and time for welding every joint. ARC GFRP reinforcement is non-electromagnetic, it is transparent to electrical fields, hence does not absorb electrical energy.

Magnetic Transparency –

ARC GFRP REBARS are non-magnetic and contain no ions. Hence are ideal reinforcement for areas close to magnetic apparatus – such as hospital MRI rooms, Electronic testing devices and certain high voltage applications.

Areas of Applications

Four general categories of applications where GFRP rebars are suitable alternatives to steel, epoxy-coated steel, and stainless steel bars.

Applications Subjected to Other Corrosive Agents –

Chemical processing industries as well as domestic or industrial wastewaters constitute major sources of corrosion for steel reinforcement. Typical applications include: wastewater treatment plants; petrochemical plants; pulp and paper mill and liquid gas plants; pipelines and tanks for fossil; cooling towers; chimneys; mining operations of various types, nuclear power plants; and nuclear dump facilities.

Reinforced Concrete Exposed to Deicing Salts –

FRP bars can eliminate the corrosion problems and reduce maintenance and repair costs in Extreme climate conditions and hilly areas where massive quantities of deicing salts are used every year on roads and pavements. Applications include: parking structures; bridge decks; jersey barriers, parapets, curbs, retaining walls and foundations, roads and slabs on grade and many others.

Applications Requiring Low Electric Conductivity or Electromagnetic Neutrality –

Using steel bars in applications where low electric conductivity or electromagnetic neutrality is needed often result in a complex construction layout, if such use is possible at all. Possible applications are: aluminium and copper smelting plants; manholes for electrical and telephone communication equipment; structures supporting electronic equipment such as transmission towers for telecommunications; airport control towers; magnetic resonance imaging in hospitals; railroad crossing sites, and military structures with requirement for radar invisibility.

Structures Built in or Close to Seawater –

Corrosion of steel reinforcement is a common problem in structures built in or near seawater. Possible applications are; canals; roads and buildings; offshore platforms; swimming pools and aquariums; and others.

Tunneling & Mining –

Manufacturing –

ARC GFRP rebars are manufactured using the PULTRUSION PROCESS in a modern plant with 3 new Pultrusion machines. Surface patterns on the rebars are ribbed and sand coated as required. GFRP rebars can be produced in all sizes ranging from 10mm to 40mm. GFRP rebars bends can only be made under controlled conditions in the factory.

Designs, Standards and Specifications –

GFRP rebars offers many advantages over steel rebars. The general properties of Steel reinforcement differ from GFRP REBARS and design engineers consider the same when they design the construction structures. Designers use and refer to ACI 440 when they design the structures.
